Why Local Government Matters Project

Why Local Government Matters Project
08 May 2015

The Australian Centre of Excellence for Local Government (ACELG) is undertaking national research to determine community attitudes to local government. Based on a survey of 2,000 Australians, the research will demonstrate how and why communities value the activities and role of local governments.

The project 'Why Local Government Matters' aims to support broader discussions and research on local government reform, intergovernmental relations, and the roles and responsibilities of Australia's three tiers of government in the context of the federation.

Importantly, the project aims to strengthen the quality and depth of existing empirical research about how and to what extent local government is valued by individuals and communities. The project is the first of its kind and its results will be applicable to all governments and organisations for the development of evidence-based local policy to benefit communities.

The project is being conducted by the UTS Centre for Local Government (UTS:CLG). The Director of CLG and ACELG, Associate Professor Roberta Ryan, leads the research. Preliminary results will be available in mid-2015.
